Happy Birthday Kierin!

I know this is a little behind the times, but Kierin celebrated his 5th birthday on August 17th! Its hard to believe that he is only 5 because it seems like he has been around all my life; at the same time its hard to believe that he is 5 already since I think of him as my little baby Kierin!

Kierin had a great birthday-participating in a kids race in Anchorage and going to see the "Star Wars: Clone Wars" movie with his best buds Michael and Jack Moore and their mom, Mommy & Daddy, and Jessica's friend Katherine. Also, Meemaw and Peepaw came over for Scooby Doo cake and the present opening ceremony! So, it was a great day for a birthday.

Thank you for the pirate chest Meemaw! Kierin loves to play with this when we go to the rec room before dinner.

Kierin, with Michael and Jack as they prepare to play the soccer game that Grandma Kathy sent. Thank you Grandma-Kierin knows how hard this was to find!

Kierin makes a wish and blows out his candles.

Even Connor enjoyed the cake-especially the icing!

Congratulations Gov. Palin

Apparently, Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate as the candidate for Vice-President, making her the first Republican female V.P. candidate and the 1st female candidate since Geraldine Ferraro ran with Walter Mondale in '84(?) election for the Democratic Party against Reagan.

Alaskans are feeling a swell of pride this morning, regardless of Party affiliation, as we are happy when one of our own makes it big. Also, for a state that is often ignored or marginalized in some national stages, it is nice to see us become a major player in national (if not international politics). Win or lose, Alaskans are pretty proud this morning.

Here is the article from msn.com:

SNBC and NBC News
updated 8:00 a.m. AKT, Fri., Aug. 29, 2008
WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, making her the first woman ever to serve on a Republican presidential ticket.

McCain's decision was revealed just hours before he was set to appear with his newly-minted running mate at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, the first Alaskan to appear on a national ticket, was elected Alaska's first woman governor in 2006. The state’s voters had grown weary of career politician Gov. Frank Murkowski, whom she defeated in the GOP primary.

“I've been blessed with the right timing here,” Palin said before the election. “There's no doubt that Alaskans right now are dealing in an atmosphere of distrust of government and industry.”

She has proven to be a popular governor. Eighty percent of the state's voters gave her a "somewhat favorable" or "very favorable" rating in a July 2008 poll.

Surprising choice
Palin's selection was a stunning surprise, as McCain passed over many other better-known prospects, some of whom had been the subject of intense speculation for weeks or months.

At 44, she is a generation younger than Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well, and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

On Aug. 1, Palin scored a major victory when the Alaska legislature passed a bill that authorizes her administration to award a license to TransCanada Alaska to build a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s North Slope to a hub in Canada.

The pipeline would be the largest construction project in the history of North America. If completed as hoped within ten years, it would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The United States imported about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in 2007.

But Palin’s seemingly bright future was clouded in late July when the state legislature voted to hire an independent investigator to find out whether she tried to have a state official fire her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.

The allegation was made by former Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, whom Palin fired in mid-July.

“It is a governor’s prerogative, a right, to fill that cabinet with members whom she or he believes will do best for the people whom we are serving,” Palin told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow in an interview on Aug. 1. “So I look forward to any kind of investigation or questions being asked because I’ve got nothing to hide.”

Palin also reacted to the indictment of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens by calling it “very dismaying.” She added, “Hopefully though, this won’t be a distraction and get people’s minds off what has to be done in the grand scheme of things.”

As for the prospect of her being vice president, Palin told Kudlow that she could not answer the question of whether she wanted the job “until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here….”

Palin is married to Todd Palin, a lifelong Alaskan who is a production operator on the North Slope and a four-time champion of the Iron Dog, which is described as “the world's longest snow-machine race.”

They have five children. Their son, Track, enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 11, 2007.

Palin gave birth to their fifth child, Trig, last April. The baby boy has Down syndrome, a genetic abnormality that impedes a child's intellectual and physical development.

"When we first heard, it was kind of confusing," Palin said, according to an account in the Anchorage Daily News. She called the news "very, very challenging."

But she added in a note, imagining what God would say to her family, "Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world you live in down there on Earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome."

Palin made a name for herself in Alaska politics by serving as mayor of Wasilla City for six years and going on to run unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in 2002.

After her unsuccessful run, Palin received an appointment to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, where she ended up serving a role in an ethics probe into Republican Party Chairman Randy Reudrich, who was questioned about conflicts of interest with the oil industry.

The investigation ultimately forced Ruedrich to resign from the commission.

Palin's role in the investigation left her a party outsider, but she was able to win the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary against Murkowski, going on to win the 2006 general election by seven points over her Democratic opponent.

During one debate before the primary, Palin said she was in favor of capital punishment in especially heinous cases such as the murder of a child. "My goodness, hang 'em up, yeah,” she said. Palin opposes abortion rights.

Born in Idaho, Palin moved to Alaska with her parents in 1964, when they went there to teach school.

She received a degree in communications and journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

We're In!

Well, after many trials and tribulations, the Frick Jrs are living in their new house!!

Of course, it is full of boxes and we are trying to figure out what goes where in our new house. Oh, and I have spent the entire day in the garage and under the house with Frick Sr (my dad) trying to hook up the gas line to our gas only dryer. Still, it is an exciting new adventure as we are now first time homebuyers. An expensive adventure, but a good one and a step in our marriage and family.

There will be pictures forthcoming, but right now all the pictures would have a million boxes in them.

Also, please send us your prayers because Jessica and I are going back to work tomorrow!

The Countdown Has Begun!

Well, we return to work next Thursday, August 14th. As of this writing, we only have four days left until we are forced to return to work. I must admit, the summer break is NOT the reason I became a teacher, but it is probably my favorite perk of being a teacher. It is nice to spend all day every day with my family. It is something precious that not too many people get to experience and I am really grateful that Jessica and I get to share the summer months with Kierin and Connor.

So, how do we spend these long summer Alaskan days? Inside, because it has rained so frickin' much this summer! Seriously though, we have spent a great deal of time this summer trying to buy a new house. The latest news is that the re-inspection turned up a few things the seller had not done or had done incorrectly, so we were not able to close on Friday. So now, our realtor sent a handyman in to finish the work and our closing is set for Monday at 1:00. So we will be moving boxes shortly thereafter. I hope to have EVERYTHING over to the new house by Tuesday night and then Jessica can unpack at the new house and I will be over here at the old house painting the kids' rooms and cleaning the carpet. FUN!

Anyway, we have found some time recently to enjoy ourselves. To begin with, Jessica turned 29 (again) on July 23rd and we celebrated by giving her presents and cheesecake. My parents took us to dinner and took the kids for awhile (The BEST present-peace and quiet!).

In addition, we were able to find time to relax at home. Here Jessica and Nudge, or "Nutty" as Connor calls him, relaxing on the couch and watching a little TV.

I was able to play a lot of hockey this summer. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture, but it was very dark in the ice rink and I had to adjust it a little. Check out my brand new white hockey pads!

Finally, Connor tried his hand at his new hobby-ART!

Visitors!!

We had our second Alaskan visitors in July. Jessica's aunt, Jani, and her husband, Bruce, were going on a Princess Tours cruise from Whittier to Seattle (I think) with stops in Denali, Juneau, and Sitka, among others. They arrived a few days early, however, in order to visit the Frick Jr.s. Aren't they lucky? We tried to give them a good tour, with stops at the animal refuge by Portage, Girdwood, Eagle River Valley, Kierin's hockey class, and the Glacier Brewhouse (best food in AK-unfortunately, it was full and we had to go to Orso's, which is really, really good also, instead).

Here are Jani and Bruce loving on Kierin back in Eagle River valley. Keirin has been to California many times and Jani and Bruce always seem to enjoy his company. In return, Kierin loves "his" Bruce.

Bruce really enjoys Kierin. He took many photos of Kierin and spent almost two whole days with him.

Connor snuggles up to his Momma at the animal refuge that we went to. Jani looked a little cold that day-it was in the upper 50's, but it was very windy down by Cook Inlet. I think that Jani thought it was going to be more "summery." Unfortunately, this was one of the coldest summers on record. Still, I think they enjoyed their visit and still thought Alaska was beautiful.

Look at this guy! I never want to get this close to a bear without a couple of fences between us. he may look docile, but he is a big, mean predator. There have been more bear attacks in Anchorage lately as people are moving into bear territory. The abundance and availability of the wildlife is exciting, but you have to respect them and realize that they are not domesticated pets. Anyway, this guy is pretty amazing and I had NEVER been that close to a bear before!

This is Alaska's other favorite animal-the moose. These guys are pretty docile-they slept or laid there the entire time we were there-but they are still big, ornery animals. Not much to look at, but they are also amazing animals.

I hope Jani and Bruce enjoyed their trip and I hope to see them back in Alaska soon!
